Weekly Programme

We run a varied programme that explores all disciplines of the performing arts.
When we are not working towards a show or performance, the terms are structured in workshops that look at improving skills as performers.

Focus of previous workshops has included:
Group 1
- Stage ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’
- Characterisation
- Projection
- Approaching a script
- Self-direction and awareness on stage
- Improvisation
- Script-writing

Group 2
- Acting in a musical context
- Acting when singing
- Characterisation
- Improvisation
- Approaching a script
- Knowing your audience when creating your work

We have visiting practitioners throughout the year to enhance the programme so the young people benefit from the expertise of experienced arts professionals and also get used to working with different people (this is a simulation of the ‘real professional arts world’).

Workshops have included:
Voice Projection with Marie Dixon
Script Writing for Film with Beth McCann from Primary Creations
Singing master class with Martin Roache
Capoeira (Brazilian Dance) with Jenny Brown
Street Dance with Naomi

Future workshops include:

  1. Make-up artist and modeller of prosthetics to instruct the group in creating wounds, scars, etc
  2. Circus skills
  3. Singing with confidence
  4. The importance of the voice

Extra opportunities
Additional workshops
In March, two current West End performers gave a ‘Les Misérables’ workshop.
After a hugely successful workshop which was enjoyed by over 50 students, they will be back on 22nd June to hold a ‘Blood Brothers’ workshop. This is open to members and non-members and is charged at £12.

Festivals
We will be entering The Greater Manchester Drama Federation’s One-Act Play Festival in June. Last year, we won the Best Play and Best Actress awards in the Under 14s category.

Theatre visits
Theatre visits are an important part of the programme.
Last year we visited:

  1. The Palace Theatre
  2. The Lowry
  3. Buxton Opera House
  4. Apollo Victoria Theatre, London to see ‘Wicked’

Our next trip is to see ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’ in April.

We also take the groups to watch Brookdale productions, most recently ‘Hay Fever’ by Noel Coward which featured two members of our group in the cast. Seven of our older members are also part of the cast of ‘Rebecca’ which we will be watching in April.

There are opportunities for young people to audition for parts in all Brookdale productions throughout the season.
We also encourage our members to get involved backstage, helping with lights, sound, stage managing and front-of-house duties.

Brookdale Youth Theatre Experience
This programme takes place in the school holidays and has included:

  1. ‘Play-in-a-day’, a one-day intensive workshop focused around choral work and the importance of chorus and working as a team. The group worked together to produce a 15-minute play.
  2. ‘Making your own theatre company’, a two-day workshop where the group took part in workshops exploring naturalism, music in theatre, stylised theatre and poetry as a device in theatre. They then formed theatre companies and produced a 5-10-minute performance using the techniques they had learned.

Summer School
From 10th -14th August, we will be holding a week-long Summer School (now in its 4th year), when we audition, cast, rehearse and then perform a fully set and costumed musical to an audience. Previous shows have included ‘Guys and Dolls’ and ‘The Sound of Music’. This year’s production is to be announced.

* Les Misérables *
